Golf prodigy Will Zalatoris announced some unwelcome news earlier this week when he revealed he'd undergone back surgery. The surgery, performed on Friday, targeted two re-herniated discs that had been causing him discomfort.

Zalatoris took to social media to share his health update, stating, "After discussing my options with my medical team, I underwent surgery this past Friday with Dr. Michael Duffy at the Texas Back Institute." Although this surgery will sideline him for the upcoming US Open and The Open, Zalatoris is looking ahead with positivity. He shared, "I woke up feeling good and excited about my long-term back health. Time to focus on my recovery and get back after it."

This isn't Zalatoris' first brush with back trouble. In 2022, during the BMW Championship, he initially sustained two herniated discs. Initially, he declined immediate surgery and opted for another intervention later, which kept him off the PGA Tour for the rest of the season following his 2023 Masters withdrawal[1][2][3].

Zalatoris had made a welcome return to the greens by December 2023 for the Hero World Challenge, managing to regain some of his lost form. However, since then, he hasn't quite returned to the form that propelled him to seventh in the world rankings and netted him three runner-up placements in Majors[1][2][3].

Due to the timing of his surgery, it seems Zalatoris will unlikely make the US Ryder Cup team, slated for late September at Bethpage Black.

This health setback is a daunting curveball, but Zalatoris is focusing on the future. "It's been a patience game," he said. "I had a lot of really good advice from guys that have had to go through the same thing, and they all said take your time, no one's ever come back from an injury taking too long."
