Close to three-quarters of 15-year-olds spend more than two hours daily on screens for entertainment, making them among the highest consumers in 36 surveyed countries. The Federal Center for Health Education advises teenagers in this age group to spend no more than two hours with digital media daily, stating, "The less screen time, the better."

Digital media usage experienced a major boost during the pandemic. With soccer training, dance classes, and other activities canceled, children were left with more screen time. Although usage slightly decreased after lifting restrictions, the long-term trend seems to persist.

Poor sleep during these formative years can lead to fatigue the following day, causing children to prefer passive activities like watching TV over active ones.

The OECD study indicates that the mental health of young people has worsened significantly over the past 15 years. The pandemic exacerbated these problems, as it coincided with a substantial increase in media usage. While a direct link between these factors has not been proven, excessive screen time or cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content can have detrimental effects, such as increased depression, anxiety, loneliness, school difficulties, body image issues, and sleep disorders. The research suggests that these risks are higher for girls.

In Germany, over half of ten-year-olds already own a smartphone, with the number varying based on social class. By the age of fifteen, almost all own their own device.
