Yakutia Minister Urges Action to Curb January's Surge in Road Fatalities
The Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure, Vladimir Sivtsev, has called for urgent action to improve road safety in the Republic of Yakutia. This follows a worrying increase in road traffic accidents and fatalities in the first half of January 2024.
Sivtsev, who chaired the government commission, highlighted common causes of road accidents, including speeding, wrong-side driving, and not wearing seat belts, especially in poor visibility. He also noted the importance of maintaining roads and deploying mobile photo-video fixation complexes to enforce traffic laws.
The commission recommended enhancing road safety through stricter traffic law enforcement, improving road infrastructure, and increasing public awareness campaigns. These measures are set to be implemented from early 2025. Sivtsev instructed road owners to maintain roads and all services to strengthen work in informing citizens about traffic rule compliance and accident prevention.
Looking at the statistics, road traffic accidents increased by 27.8% and fatalities by a staggering 200% from January 1 to 15, 2024. However, in 2023, while accidents increased by 9.5% and injured by 8.8%, fatalities decreased by 14.8%.
The government of Yakutia is committed to tackling these alarming trends. With the commission's recommendations and the minister's instructions, efforts are underway to enhance road safety, with a focus on enforcement, infrastructure, and public awareness. The implementation of these measures in early 2025 aims to significantly improve the situation on Yakutia's roads.
