Workers' Protection Proposal Sought over Radioactive Material Exposure Risks

Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt - A significant amendment to the burial law is in progress, spearheaded by the committee for work, social affairs, health, and equal opportunities. The agreement between coalition factions SPD, CDU, and FDP will undergo further discussions within the committee, with a parliamentary vote planned for the fall.

The proposed reform grants jurisdiction over military graves to the Ministry of Work, Social Affairs, Health, and Equal Opportunities under the leadership of Petra Grimm-Benne. Katrin Gensecke, social policy spokeswoman for the SPD faction, stated, "Those who served our country deserve respect beyond their lives’ end. Our proposed reform will strengthen remembrance culture and foster historical responsibility by assuming clear responsibility for military graves."

Another focus of the proposed changes is the legal recognition of 'angel babies', granting parents the right to a burial following pregnancy losses, even at an early stage. Carrying out this legal obligation becomes mandatory for medical facilities, according to Gensecke, "Losing a child during pregnancy is a devastating experience for families. Our reform brings legal clarity and facilitates a dignified farewell."

The legislation allows for a small portion of a deceased individual's ashes to be removed for keepsakes, such as memorial diamonds. This option will only be available to residents of Saxony-Anhalt who did not object during their lifetime, with close relatives conducting the removal, limited to five grams, and crematoria documenting the process.

Religious customs will also be considered in the revised law, allowing those with Muslim or Jewish faiths to forgo coffins, subject to clear guidelines. Municipalities may apply guidelines for special grave fields, and transportation will continue via closed coffin until burial.

Secondary post-mortem examinations will also be strictly regulated, with Saxony-Anhalt becoming one of the states officially defining this safety measure. Uniform standards are aimed at strengthening police and justice in cases of unexplained deaths.
