The ranks of the German Life-Saving Association (or the DLRG) put on a significant show in Thuringia last year, with an impressive boost in water rescuers. While just 382 members were diving into the action in 2023, a jump to 485 made waves in 2022! A glance at the organization's balance sheet confirms this fresh wave of participants, with the total DLRG membership in Thuringia swelling by an impressive 6.9% to a grand total of 3,431 members.

Curiously, though, the number of members taking part in swimming training, where swimming badges are justifiably earned, saw a dip as compared to the previous year — from 304 to 272 trainees. Swimming and lifesaving training are cornerstones of the state association's responsibilities, and a decrease in this area got René Rimbach, president of the Thuringian state association, talking.

Young students played an influential role in shaping the swimming training scene, particularly in the cities of Jena and Erfurt. As academic pursuits beckon, these dedicated volunteers often bid their farewells to the region, leaving behind a noticeable gap. In addition, popular demand for swimming courses frequently leaves the DLRG lifeguards juggling more commitments than they can handle, resulting in some volunteers taking well-deserved breaks. René Rimbach mentions this as one potential factor behind the decrease in swimming training.

Intriguingly, the DLRG's records did not register a single lifesaving incident in Thuringia last year. On a national scale, however, the DLRG's brave water champions managed to save 1,446 lives!
👍🤕
Despite the absence of lifesaving scenarios locally, the lifeguards in Thuringia were still keeping busy, stepping in to help 310 times last year. Providing first aid was among their many tasks, making sure those in need received timely assistance.

DLRG helpers in Thuringia aren't just about lending a hand when water is nearby. "We also get involved in various areas and lend a hand at city festivals and major sporting events," claims Rimbach. Whether these events involve water activities, like triathlons, or not, lifeguards are always in demand!
In light of the increasing number of active DLRG members in water rescue, it would be beneficial to consider implementing initiatives such as community policy updates, vocational training programs, or fitness-and-exercise sessions to further enhance the competence of these lifesavers. Meanwhile, to address the decrease in swimming training participants, potentially exploring partnerships with health-and-wellness organizations, or science-based approaches in teaching techniques could prove helpful.
