Crisis Deepens in Sudan as Millions Face Starvation and Displacement

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has left approximately 3 million people on the brink of famine, according to the International Rescue Committee (IRC). This staggering number represents half of the country, as stated by the IRC's country director for Sudan, Eatizaz Yousif.

The displacement of Sudanese people is also a significant concern. Approximately 36% of the displaced are from Khartoum, 20% from South Darfur, and 14% from North Darfur. It's important to note that more than 2 million people have crossed the border into neighboring countries, while over 7.7 million have been internally displaced.

The situation is particularly dire for children. UNICEF reports that approximately 8.9 million Sudanese children are at risk of severe food insecurity and illnesses. This alarming statistic makes Sudan home to the world's biggest number of displaced children (5 million) and is described as "one of the worst places in the world" for children by UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.

The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in the world's greatest famine and displacement crises. In some areas, famine conditions have been confirmed, such as the Zamzam camp near El Fasher, which remains under siege with no road access for food aid.

Humanitarian aid efforts face significant challenges, including destroyed infrastructure, disrupted markets, minimal water supply maintenance, and insufficient cash assistance. The UN’s 2025 humanitarian response plan aims to assist roughly 21 million people but is severely underfunded, with only $4.2 billion requested so far.

Violence against civilians continues, with reported indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure including hospitals and prisons. Political instability has deepened, with rival factions forming parallel governments.

In the midst of this crisis, women, children, and entire families are forced to evacuate when the situation in Sudan deteriorates, leaving everything behind. The humanitarian crisis and famine in Sudan remain dire and are worsening amid ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
