Checking the Temperature: Potsdam Earns a Yellow Warn

Potsdam Experiences Yellow Safety Alert: Yellow Card Issued due to High Temperatures - Warning issued for Potsdam: Enhanced alert due to potential hazard

Hanging onto its greenery, Potsdam manages to perform fairly well in the nationwide heat evaluation by the German Environmental Aid. This study, a collaboration with the Potsdam-based Luftbild Umwelt Planung GmbH, analyzed satellite data from 190 cities with over 50,000 inhabitants. The color of the cards - Red, Yellow, and Green - symbolize the findings based on the city's evaluation.

Potsdam boards two Green cards and one Yellow card. It scores two Green cards for its seal-space ratio (approximately 36.8 percent) and the number of trees, hedges, or flower beds. Regarding the average surface temperature, it only gets a Yellow card. The Earth and water temperatures of the state's capital average around 34.1 degrees Celsius between June and August, according to the Environmental Aid.

Compared to Flensburg, the coldest town in the country with an average of 29.4 degrees Celsius, it's warmer in Potsdam. On the other hand, Mannheim takes the crown for the highest surface temperature with an average of around 38.4 degrees Celsius. The surface temperature usually surpasses the air temperature during the summer, coming closest to the perceived temperature, as per the Environmental Aid.

Residents of Cottbus are particularly vulnerable to the heat, with an average surface temperature of about 35.2 degrees Celsius, earning it a Red card.

A staggering 12 million people across the nation encounter extreme heat in their everyday lives. Thirty-one cities receive a Red card, 131 a Yellow card, and 28 a Green card. Hattingen in North Rhine-Westphalia tops the list while Mannheim lands the worst.

Without explicit details, it's challenging to determine how Potsdam's climate factors, such as greenhouse gas emissions, urban heat island effects, climate adaptation, transportation, community engagement, regulatory compliance, and policy impact its "Yellow Card" status or how it compares to other cities. However, being the home of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research might offer an advantage concerning climate research and policy awareness.

  1. Although Potsdam received a Yellow card for its average surface temperature, it is worth examining the city's climate policy and its relation to other environmental factors, such as greenhouse gas emissions and urban heat island effects, to understand its climate standing more comprehensively.
  2. The concerns over climate change and environmental welfare extend beyond Potsdam's temperature analysis, as science, health-and-wellness, and environmental-science play vital roles in understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change on various communities.
