HYROX Race Categories and Divisions

The HYROX race categories are organised into three main divisions: Singles (Individual), Doubles, and Relay. Within Singles and Doubles, there are further subdivisions such as Open, Pro, and Elite categories, along with age-group divisions to ensure fair competition across different fitness and experience levels.

  • Singles (Individual): One athlete completes all eight 1km runs and eight functional workout stations solo. This division includes:
  • Open: A more accessible format with lighter equipment loads.
  • Pro: A more challenging format with heavier weights and standard equipment.
  • Elite: The highest-level competitors, often the fastest and most experienced athletes.
  • Doubles: Two athletes share the workload, alternating runs and workouts strategically. This division also has Open and Pro categories.
  • Relay: Teams where each member completes parts of the race, emphasising teamwork and coordination. This division typically does not split into Open/Pro but still uses age groupings.

Age Divisions

HYROX uses age categories to create balanced competition among peers, with commonly recognised brackets such as:

| Age Group | Age Range | |-----------|-----------| | 1 | 18-25 | | 2 | 26-35 | | 3 | 36-45 | | 4 | 46-55 | | 5 | 56+ |

These age groups apply across Singles, Doubles, and Relay to allow comparison against competitors of similar age.

Qualification Criteria for HYROX World Championships

Competitors typically qualify for the HYROX World Championships by achieving qualifying times or rankings in official HYROX events during the season. The Elite 15 category at the World Championships features the top 15 athletes in Pro divisions (Singles, Doubles) by qualifying times or world rankings. Ranking in the Pro categories or setting regional/world records in previous events usually grants access to Championship qualification. Athletes gain entry to Open and Doubles divisions at the Championships through their performance in regular season races, with top performers advancing to Pro or Elite categories.

Example of Equipment and Format Differences in Categories

  • Both Singles Open and Pro share the format of 8 workout stations alternating with 1km runs.
  • The weight of equipment is lighter in Open (e.g., sled push/pull weights) compared to Pro, making Open more accessible for intermediate athletes.
  1. The HYROX competition in Vancouver, hosted in December, attracted athletes from all over the globe.
  2. The relay team category in HYROX events emphasizes teamwork and coordination, while the singles and doubles divisions feature subdivisions like Open, Pro, and Elite categories.
  3. HYROX incorporates science and health-and-wellness into their races, with events like the Cigna Healthcare HYROX Hong Kong and the HYROX Bologna emphasizing fitness-and-exercise.
  4. To progress to the HYROX World Championships, athletes must achieve qualifying times or rankings in official HYROX events during the season, with the Elite 15 category reserved for the top 15 athletes in the Pro divisions.
