CIA Declassifies Documents Detailing Psychic Experiments on Uri Geller

In an unprecedented move, the CIA has updated its CREST Archive, making over 12 million declassified pages publicly accessible. Among these documents are those detailing the CIA's experiments on psychic Uri Geller in 1973, which were conducted with the aim of understanding the physical and psychological variables underlying his alleged abilities.

These experiments, which took place at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), were part of broader U.S. intelligence efforts during the Cold War. Concerns over Soviet psychic espionage and paranormal phenomena led to research into mind control and supernatural warfare under projects like MK-ULTRA and Stargate.

During the eight-day experimental sessions in August 1973, Geller was asked to reproduce images from different locations. The methods used included creating drawings by randomly selecting words from a dictionary. In one instance, Geller was placed in an opaque, acoustically and electrically shielded room and asked to recreate drawings that were created elsewhere.

The results of these experiments were mixed and remain somewhat controversial. While some CIA and SRI scientists privately believed in the paranormal elements of these phenomena, seeing some operational potential in remote viewing and psychic intelligence gathering, conclusive proof of Geller’s psychic powers as genuine espionage tools was never definitively established.

However, the researchers concluded that Uri Geller had demonstrated his paranormal perceptual ability in a convincing and unambiguous manner during the experiments. Topics covered in the updated CREST Archive include psychic spying and the possible existence of UFOs, indicating that the CIA's interest in these areas went beyond the experiments with Geller.

Uri Geller himself expressed surprise at the release of the documents detailing the CIA's experiments on him. The documents were previously only available at the National Archives in Maryland on four physical computers, accessible between 09:00 and 16:30 each day. The updated CREST Archive now contains approximately 930,000 documents, making the information more accessible to the public.
