Unearthing the Link

For their study, the researchers analyzed data from the Study of Environment, Lifestyle, and Fibroids (SELF), which focuses on reproductive health in African-American women aged 23-34 living in Detroit, MI. They questioned participants about their contraceptive use, time spent outdoors, and vitamin D supplementation. In total, 1,662 women provided blood samples to measure their 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels.

The Connection Revealed

"Our study found that women using contraception containing estrogen tended to have higher vitamin D levels than other women," said Dr. Harmon. Even after adjusting for factors like seasonal light exposure, the effect remained significant. "We couldn't determine any behavioral differences such as increased time spent outdoors to explain the increase," added Dr. Harmon.

The results of the study suggest that contraceptives containing estrogen appear to boost vitamin D levels, which may drop when women stop using them.

Vitamin D Deficiency in Early Pregnancy

The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, imply that women planning to conceive or become pregnant may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency. As such, it's wise for those planning to cease birth control to ensure their vitamin D levels are sufficient while trying to conceive and during pregnancy.

Dr. Harmon continues to investigate the relationship between vitamin D and contraception, seeking to learn more about the possible reasons for this connection. Additionally, she is working on another group of participants to delve deeper into how vitamin D varies across the menstrual cycle.

Note: While the connection between estrogen-based contraceptives and increased vitamin D levels is intriguing, the exact underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Health professionals have yet to draw definitive conclusions about this relationship, and further research is needed to understand its impact on vitamin D metabolism and overall health.
