UK Winter: Place Bowls of Salt in Windows to Fight Condensation
The UK is bracing for winter, and with it comes the risk of condensation and mold in homes. Experts are advising a simple, if limited, solution: placing bowls of salt in windows to absorb moisture. However, they stress that this method alone is not a panacea and proper ventilation is crucial.
Condensation occurs when warm, moist air inside a house meets cold surfaces like windows, causing water vapor to turn into liquid. This can lead to damp conditions, mold growth, and damage to window frames. While placing a bowl of salt near a window can absorb some moisture and reduce condensation, it is not a permanent solution.
Salt begins to absorb water vapor at around 74 percent relative humidity, which is higher than typical UK household humidity levels. However, it must be renewed every few days and cannot replace proper humidity control and ventilation. The most effective methods to reduce condensation are to lower indoor humidity and improve ventilation. This can be achieved by using warm, fresh air and airing out rooms regularly. In cars, using air conditioning is an efficient way to remove moisture and prevent condensation. Different areas of the house can have different humidity levels, so salt may help in some situations but not others.
While placing bowls of salt in windows can help reduce condensation in UK homes this winter, it is not a substitute for proper ventilation and humidity control. Homeowners are advised to use this method alongside regular airing of rooms and, where possible, using warm, fresh air to maintain a healthy indoor environment.
