In a study led by sleep researcher Rebecca Robbins from Harvard Medical School, it has been revealed that the use of the snooze button on alarm clocks is widespread, particularly in Germany. The study, published in the journal "Scientific Reports," analyzed data from over 21,000 users of the "Sleep Cycle" app, totaling around three million nights.

According to the findings, these users utilized the snooze function in nearly 56% of nights. Women were discovered to use the snooze button more frequently than men, with an average of 2.5 times on days when the button was pressed. Men, on the other hand, averaged 2.3 times.

The data also indicated that when the snooze button was used, people typically pressed it more than once. The average number of presses varied across countries, with Sweden showing the highest average at 2.7 times per day, followed closely by Germany and the United States at 2.5 times. Japan and Australia had the lowest average, with 2.2 times.

The research suggests that the snooze button can disrupt the most important sleep phases, specifically the hours leading up to waking, which are rich in REM sleep. Pressing the snooze button repeatedly usually offers light sleep rather than the restorative deep sleep necessary for good health.

Sleep deprivation can have harmful effects on health, including impacting mental health, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and reducing cognitive performance. To ensure healthy sleep patterns, experts recommend aiming for seven to nine hours of sleep per night and setting the alarm for the latest possible time, getting out of bed when the first alarm goes off.
