Thousands of Animals Slated for Destruction on an Estonian Farm due to a Swine Fever Outbreak

In a concerning development for the agricultural sector in Estonia, a swine fever outbreak has been reported in the Viljandi parish. The outbreak was announced by Inge Saavo, Head of the Luna region of the Department of Agriculture and Food.

The affected farm is a pig farm, with approximately 4,500 animals set to be destroyed as a result of the outbreak. The farm in question is the Nurme farm located within Viljandi parish, operated by Mati Kallas.

However, it's important to note that the swine fever outbreak at the Nurme farm is not an isolated incident. In fact, more than 17,000 domestic pigs have been found infected and subsequently slaughtered in five separate epidemic foci across the country this year.

Each of these five foci has reported cases of infected domestic pigs, and the infections and subsequent slaughterings have occurred in these foci, not just on the Nurme farm. The exact locations of these foci have not been specified.

Inge Saavo, who reported the swine fever outbreak, has not specifically reported the infections and subsequent actions in these five foci.

This outbreak marks a significant blow to the Estonian pig farming industry, with a total of over 17,000 domestic pigs affected across these five foci. The animals on the Nurme farm, as well as those in the other affected foci, will be destroyed as a result of the swine fever outbreak.

The Department of Agriculture and Food is working diligently to contain the spread of the disease and mitigate its impact on the industry. Further updates on the situation are expected to be released in due course.
