"Let's Debunk the Farce of 'Information Disorder Syndrome'"

In 2017, the term "information disorder" entered the public discourse with a report titled "Information Disorder Toward an interdisciplinary framework for research and policymaking." This report, drafted for the Council of Europe, categorized false information as misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. (Derakhshan & Hossein, 2017)
The original election of President Trump triggered the commission of this report, and since then, the concept has been popularized by think tanks, academics, and governements. We've all become quite familiar with these terms in recent years.
In a 2020 study, the idea of information disorder evolved into a mental health condition. The paper posited that management of this disorder involves regulating the flow of false information, including rumor surveillance, targeted messaging, and community engagement. Those repeatedly suffering from this disorder at the Grade 1 level, as well as all sufferers from Grades 2 and 3, would require psycho-social counseling and potentially strict regulations and enforcement.
This leapt into the lexicon of both the censorship-industrial complex and the mental health industry. However, it's important to note that the terms syndrome, disease, and mental disorders are often used interchangeably. Notably, organizations such as First Draft and the Aspen Institute suggest that the cure for this syndrome is to cease the proliferation of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation online.
This raises the question: will the American Psychiatric Association (APA) officially recognize "information disorder syndrome" in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)?
Is this a real possibility?
The APA is considering how to incorporate "information disorder" or "information disorder syndrome" into their modalities - a project that taxpayers partially funded. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided the APA with $2 million for this project.
As "information disorder syndrome" is not yet a recognized mental health condition, NIMH funding has not been forthcoming yet. However, if this syndrome continues to evolve into a mental health condition by the medical establishement, NIMH may fund studies to treat or manage it, particularly for those at the Grade 2 and 3 levels who require psycho-social counseling and potentially strong regulations and enforcement.
The government has a history of exerting control over individuals, and making "information disorder" a syndrome allows the state to intervene and force individuals to conform to societal norms. This is not outside the realm of possibilities.
The APA has a history of discriminating against and labeling categories of people who diverge from the norm, such as when being gay was classified as a mental health disorder in the 1950s. This continued for decades, and the APA supported various medical treatments such as castrations, hysterectomies, lobotomies, drug therapies, LSD, and electroconvulsive therapy.
This brings us back to the topic at hand: if information disorder becomes a syndrome, the state could intervene in individuals' lives to ensure they conform to societal norms.
Is this a future we are heading towards? It remains to be seen, but it's essential to stay vigilant and reject such attempts at manipulation.
