Strike at W Montreal Hotel Continues as Union Seeks Fair Wage Increase

The W Montreal Hotel, a luxury establishment known for its high nightly rates of over $400, is currently experiencing operational disruptions due to a strike by its workers. The Syndicat des travailleuses et travailleurs de W Hôtel Montréal, a union affiliated with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), began the strike on Saturday morning.

Negotiations between the hotel management and the union have been ongoing for six months, but specific details about the union's demands or wage expectations are not currently available. However, it is known that wages are the main point of contention in these discussions.

Union president Raphaël Gouin-Loubert stated that the workers are dissatisfied with the employer's offer, which they claim is less than several other hotels in Montreal. In contrast, Serge Monette, president of the CSN's commerce federation, has expressed his support for the workers, believing they should win the same wage increase as other unions.

The strike is a response to the hotel's recent shutdown, and the union has banked 120 strike hours, which they can use when needed. The workers are not close to securing the at least 21% wage increase over four years that other unions in the hotel sector, also under the CSN, have achieved.

A round of intensive talks is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. The union held a one-day strike last Monday, and the current strike is set to last for the entire weekend.

This report was first published in French on Aug. 9, 2025. The W Montreal Hotel management has made efforts to maintain service despite the strike, ensuring guests' stays are as unaffected as possible.

As the negotiations continue, the public is encouraged to monitor local labor news for updates on this ongoing dispute.

  1. Despite the ongoing negotiation about wage increase, the union affiliated with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) at the W Montreal Hotel is pressing for a wage increase similar to that achieved by other unions in the hotel sector.
  2. The current strike at the W Montreal Hotel, a well-known luxury establishment, could have significant implications for the health and wellness of its workers, as they strive for a fair increase in wages within the context of the broader science of workplace-wellness.
