Stranded on Pobeda Peak for a week, Natalia Nagovitsyna's life was saved by an unnamed Italian mountaineer who tragically lost his own in the process.
In the treacherous and unforgiving terrain of the former Soviet territory, Pobeda Peak stands as the most challenging and dangerous of the "eight-thousanders." Recently, a tragic incident has unfolded on this formidable peak, involving 47-year-old Russian mountaineer, Natalia Nagovitsyna.
On August 12, Nagovitsyna fell and fractured her lower leg during her descent from Pobeda Peak, the highest peak of the Tian Shan. Since then, she has been stranded at 7,000 meters without the ability to move. Her climbing partner provided initial aid and descended the mountain to seek help, but has not returned since.
The situation is critical, and it's a race against time to save Nagovitsyna. Adverse weather conditions are complicating rescue operations, with a helicopter unable to reach her due to zero visibility. Nagovitsyna is running out of food and has little water.
A drone on August 19 showed that she is still alive in her tent, offering a glimmer of hope. However, two rescue attempts have proven unsuccessful. The Italian mountaineer who attempted to rescue Nagovitsyna, but unfortunately, died during the rescue attempt, remains unidentified.
This is not the first time Nagovitsyna has faced such peril. Four years ago, her husband, Sergey, died on Khan Tengri peak. After his death, Nagovitsyna placed a memorial plaque at the spot where he passed away.
Pobeda Peak, with its formidable reputation, has never seen a successful rescue of an injured mountaineer. The current situation is testing the limits of what is possible in the face of such adversity.
As the world watches and hopes for Nagovitsyna's safe rescue, the Italian mountaineer who gave his life in the attempt is remembered. The identity of the brave soul who made the ultimate sacrifice remains unknown, but his actions will never be forgotten.
A Mi-8 helicopter from the Russian Ministry of Defense had to make an emergency landing recently, adding another layer of complexity to the rescue mission. The fate of Nagovitsyna hangs in the balance, and the world awaits news of her safe return.
