A 39-year-old woman, identified as Lydia S., is under investigation after allegedly perpetrating a knife attack at Hamburg's central train station last Friday, leaving 18 people injured, some critically.

The suspect has previously come to police attention due to violent incidents. In February, she was accused of assaulting a child on a playground near the airport. As a result, she was committed to a psychiatric clinic by a doctor called in by the police.

In early March, while in the same clinic, there was another incident involving the woman and a fellow patient. The 39-year-old allegedly kicked her in the thigh.

On the day preceding the station attack, the woman was spotted at the airport with visible injuries on her face. Despite informing the police, she was allowed to leave due to her claim of flying to Paris that day.

Authorities revealed that Lydia S. had recently been released from a psychiatric hospital on the same day she was admitted in early May. The day of the crime, she returned to the airport, intending to travel to Paris, but was unable to do so due to identification issues.

Investigations have thus far ruled out political or extremist motives for the attack, with strong indications of mental illness being the primary factor. Lydia S. has a documented history of violent behavior, including a previous attack on a train to Bremen, an argument with her father leading to serious injuries, and an incident at Hamburg Airport's food court where she punched a six-year-old girl. Her diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia and homelessness have been cited as contributing factors.
