Stabbing Incident at Major Train Station Ensues Chaos

Hamburg Central Station Stabbing Leaves 18 Injured, Suspect Committed to Psychiatric Clinic

A 39-year-old woman, believed to have no fixed address, was arrested following a knife attack at Hamburg Central Station that left 18 people injured. The incident occurred on Friday evening, with the suspect reportedly stabbing multiple victims at random on the platform between tracks 13 and 14.

The detention order, issued by a judge, focuses on the 15 individuals who were directly injured by the knife, suffering cuts or stab wounds of varying severity. Initially, three individuals—a 24-year-old man and three women aged 24, 52, and 85—were reported to be in critical condition. However, authorities later confirmed that all injured parties are now in stable condition.

The attack was swiftly interrupted by two bystanders who intervened, limiting the number of casualties. The suspect, who surrendered without resistance, acted alone, according to current findings. The weapon used in the attack has been secured by law enforcement officers.

Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher stated that, while some of the injured had been discharged from the hospital, several remained hospitalized. The busy transportation hub, with over 500,000 daily travelers, was particularly crowded during Friday evening rush hour, marking the start of one-week school holidays in Hamburg.

Investigations uncovered no political motives for the attack. Instead, there are now substantial indications of a mental illness on the part of the suspect. As a result, the public prosecutor's office filed a detention application with a focus on mental health assessment and treatment.

The suspect, who appears to be originally from Lower Saxony, has no known permanent residence. Hamburg Central Station remains one of Germany's most heavily frequented transportation hubs, with no significant increase in violent incidents reported since the implementation of knife bans in the area around the station in October 2023.

Life has gradually returned to normal at Hamburg Central Station. Train traffic has resumed, and authorities have cleaned up any remaining evidence of the attack. Hundreds of people continue to journey through the station, marking the start of one-week school holidays in Hamburg.
