No Apologies: Spahn Stands Firm on Costly Mask Procurement Scandal

In the latest round of political drama, Jens Spahn, the CDU's union boss, candidly addressed the controversy surrounding his alleged pricey mask deals and the questionable logistics contract, all while serving as health minister, during the initial Coronavirus pandemic.

"In a pinch, having is better than needing," Spahn retorted coolly in a TableToday podcast interview. "We were in an unprecedented crisis, and stocks were dwindling. Everyone, left and right, urged us: 'Grab it, no matter the price.' We took on financial risks, knowing fully well what we were getting into," he further clarified.

This bold statement was in response to a damning report by Süddeutsche Zeitung, WDR, and NDR newspapers, which leaked a previously hidden report by special investigator Margarethe Sudhof that scrutinized Spahn's high-priced mask acquisitions. The report echoes allegations that Jens seemingly favored a local Westphalia-based company, Fiege, during the procurement of mask logistics, bypassing a standard competitive bidding process.

As the uproar continues, the Greens and the Left have called out for immediate transparency and the unveiling of the Sudhof report in its entirety to the parliament. Britta Haßelmann, the Green faction chairwoman, emphasized the significance of an unredacted expose on the X platform. Going a step further, Christian Görke, the parliamentary business manager for the Left faction, stressed the necessity for the exposed truth in the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND).

When queried about these concerns, Spahn calmly asserted that there's been no new information made public since the incident occurred years ago. Confronted with claims of favoritism, Spahn squarely defended his actions by stating that the dire urgency dictated a necessity to swiftly contact familiar networks and bypass traditional tendering procedures.

The expected publication of the Sudhof report is imminent, Spahn hinted. "I have no doubt that the ministry will weigh the report and shed light on its contents for the Bundestag and the public," said Spahn with conviction.

While his approach to mask procurement has drawn flak in the time since, Spahn has remained unfazed, insisting that the procedures used back then were innovative and necessary for salvaging a bad situation. He now confesses that while methods like the one employed to secure masks at a fixed price of €4.50 are no longer advisable, it was the best option available at the time.
