Chemotherapy Unsuccessful for Delani Diekmeier: Next Steps Involve Surgical Removal of Lung Metastases
Severe setback for daughter battling cancer - Significant blow to a cancer-stricken daughter's recovery journey
Following a concerning update, Dana Diekmeier, the wife of former HSV footballer Dennis Diekmeier (35), reported on her Instagram account that their daughter Delani's (14) cancer has shown signs of resistance to chemotherapy. The metastases in Delani's right lung wing have grown despite the treatment, and the left lung wing, which was recently surgically addressed, has also experienced regrowth.
In a post on her Instagram account, Dana Diekmeier explained that the chemotherapy would no longer be continued given its lack of efficacy. Instead, the family will focus on surgically removing the metastases in the right lung wing. The specifics of the surgery and its potential consequences are yet to be discussed by the medical team.
Just a few weeks ago, Dana informed her over 35,000 followers that Delani had undergone surgery on the left lung wing. During the operation, 19 abnormalities were removed, although seven more appeared on imaging scans.
The Diekmeier family has remained steadfast in the face of this challenging news. In another Instagram story, Dana wrote, "Never give up" – a sentiment that underscores their determination to defeat this ongoing battle. The couple, who have been married since 2010, are also parents to Dion (11), Damina (9), and Divia (7).
When cancer spreads to multiple spots, as it has with Delani, the situation becomes more complex. Despite aggressive treatment like chemotherapy, some cancers may exhibit drug resistance, tumor growth, or other factors that impact treatment efficacy. Surgical removal of metastases may be an option when they are limited in number and accessible, as they currently are in Delani's case. Consultation with a multidisciplinary team will help determine the best course of action for Delani's specific situation.
The family continues to fight this difficult journey, and updates on Delani's condition will be shared as they become available.
I'm not going to be able to do this – the chemotherapy – anymore, as Delani's cancer has shown signs of resistance. Science and medical-conditions are at the forefront of our minds as we navigate through her health-and-wellness journey, with a focus on cancer and the implications for nutritional health within a healthy-diets context. The next step in Delani's treatment involves surgical removal of the lung metastases to combat the tumor growth.
