SIBUR Introduces Novel Polypropylene Variant for Sanitary Uses

In a groundbreaking development, SIBUR, Russia's largest polymer producer, has introduced a new grade of polypropylene (PP MG182 K) specifically designed for use in hygiene and medical products. This new polymer grade is set to revolutionise the industry, offering a viable alternative to traditional solutions that rely on blends of several polymer grades.

Over the past two decades, the use of polypropylene-based nonwovens (spunbond fabrics) in the hygiene and medical sectors has grown considerably. SIBUR's innovative PP MG182 K is poised to capitalise on this trend, offering a solution that provides the required softness without the use of foreign additives.

The development of PP MG182 K was a collaborative effort between SIBUR and a leading Russian manufacturer of hygiene products. The new polymer grade is suitable for supply both within Russia and to international markets as a raw material for the production of nonwoven fabrics.

One of the key features of PP MG182 K is its potential to be further improved to eliminate the use of phthalates, additives facing stricter regulation in several countries. This improvement is expected to broaden the applications and export potential, indicating SIBUR aims for notable international market penetration beyond the Russian market.

SIBUR expects to sell over 1,000 tonnes of this polymer grade by the end of 2025. While the product is newly introduced, the technical innovations and regulatory adaptations position PP MG182 K well to meet growing global demand in hygiene and medical applications, especially for nonwoven fabrics requiring softness and regulatory compliance.

The current market demand for SIBUR's new polypropylene grade PP MG182 K in the hygiene and medical industries is emerging and shows promising potential both within Russia and internationally. The improved polypropylene copolymer's broader scope of application will enhance its export potential, making it a significant player in the global market.
