Severe flooding and relentless rain persist in the Northern regions

In the wake of Tropical Storm Wipha, also known as Severe Tropical Storm Crising in the Philippines, Thailand has been experiencing indirect impacts through strong winds and heavy rains. This article provides an update on the impact of the storm in the provinces of Nan, Phayao, and Chiang Rai.

**Flooding and Damages**

Nan Province has been hit hardest by the storm, with at least 130 homes damaged due to remnants of the storm and exacerbated by monsoon conditions. The flooding was particularly severe in Muang and Phu Phiang districts, where the Nan River began overflowing.

Phayao and Chiang Rai provinces were also included in the list of areas expected to experience heavy rainfall, but specific details on flooding damages in these provinces are less documented compared to Nan.

**Evacuations**

While there are no reports of large-scale evacuations in these provinces, residents have been urged to remain vigilant due to the risk of flash floods and landslides. Authorities have prioritized the evacuation of vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and bedridden patients.

**Landslide Risks**

The heavy rainfall associated with Wipha has increased the risk of landslides across northern Thailand, including Phayao and Chiang Rai. Residents have been advised to be cautious and prepared for potential landslides, especially in hilly and mountainous areas.

**Emergency Response**

Local support teams, including police, military personnel, and local administrative bodies, have been mobilised to assist in the emergency response. Thoeng Hospital in Chiang Rai has set up an emergency medical service point at Ban Pang Kha HPH in tambon Tab Tao to serve the local community.

In Nan, evacuation plans have been activated, with 844 patients potentially being relocated from hospitals if the situation worsens. Authorities in Tha Wang Pha district have requested military transport vehicles from the 38th Military Circle to assist with patient evacuation.

**Safety Measures**

Residents in highland and river-adjacent areas are urged to monitor conditions closely and watch for danger signs such as continued heavy rain, discoloured stream water, unusual mountain noises, or sudden rises in water levels. Those living in low-lying communities along the river have been instructed to evacuate to nearby shelters.

As of the latest updates, Tropical Depression Wipha has been downgraded to a low-pressure system, but it has caused heavy rains and flooding in 40 provinces, including Nan, Phayao, and Chiang Rai. Residents are advised to stay alert and prepared for potential hazards.

  1. Climate change and environmental science are crucial in understanding the increased frequency and severity of tropical storms like Tropical Storm Wipha, which could impact medical-conditions and health-and-wellness, given the ensuing floods, damages, and landslide risks.
  2. In light of the indirect impacts of Tropical Storm Wipha on the provinces of Nan, Phayao, and Chiang Rai, it's essential to utilize weather forecasting to anticipate potential weather changes and make necessary preparations for the safety and well-being of the communities affected.
  3. While fighting against the recent floods and resulting damages in northern Thailand, authorities should prioritize environmental-science initiatives to restore, rehabilitate, and protect against climate change, preparing the region for future weather changes and ensuring the safety and health-and-wellness of its residents.
