Safely executing a dip in a baptismal tub: guidelines
Plunging into the Chilly Waters of Yakutsk's Epiphany
Hey there, folks! Cold weather lovers in Yakutsk and beyond, here's a heads-up for the upcoming Epiphany ice swimming. The Emergency Services team has got some vital safety tips to help keep you safe and sound. Here's what you need to know!
Check Your Health Status
First things first, give your body a once-over. Winter swimming isn't encouraged for folks with kidney troubles, heart conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes, or pregnant women.
Pick the Right Spot
Avoid taking a dip in unorganized areas as they can be dangerous and potentially lead to accidents.
Avoid Alcohol
Stay sober before plunging into the Epiphany waters. Drinking beforehand is a no-no.
Eat Before Swimming
Don't swim on an empty stomach. Chow down at least an hour before you dive in.
Wait Your Turn
If there's a line, be patient and calm. Remember, it's a kind gesture to let women with young children and senior citizens go ahead.
Use Dedicated Changing Tents
Hop into the specially designed changing tents for a quick change after the swim.
Bring Essential Gear
Don't forget your towel, rubber slippers (besides your swimsuit), and warm outerwear for after drying off.
Warm Up First
Do a few squats and bends to shake off the chill before wading into the ice hole.
One at a Time
Stand in line at the hole to avoid overcrowding the weak ice. Keep a watchful eye on children and help them into the water.
Be Careful
Move slowly and carefully when diving in, especially if there isn't a ladder.
Limit Your Time
Three dips and then step aside to give others a turn.
Dry Off Thoroughly
Wipe yourself down with a towel, quickly get dressed, and don't stay out in the cold for too long. The feeling of warmth can fade fast.
Keep Warm
If you get chilled, cover up with clothing or a warm blanket, sip on hot sweet drinks, and head indoors if possible.
Seek Help When Necessary
If you suddenly feel unwell, reach out to medical help, lifeguards, or law enforcement.
