Riders operating e-scooters under the influence of narcotics
In the heart of Gelsenkirchen, on a typical September morning, a 46-year-old resident found himself in an unexpected situation. On the 16th of last month, around 8:40 AM, he was stopped by the local police while riding an E-scooter on Straße Freiheit.
The Gelsenkirchen police consider E-scooters to be motor vehicles, and the individual was reminded that the rules of the road apply equally to these devices. This includes the strict prohibition of operating any vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating substances.
Chief Inspector Oliver Gromadies, head of the traffic management unit at Gelsenkirchen police, emphasised the importance of this rule. Alcohol and drugs have no place on the roads, as they impair reaction time and judgment, putting not only the user but also other road users at risk.
The individual admitted to consuming both alcohol and drugs before starting his journey. As a precaution, a doctor was called to determine the exact concentration of substances in the individual's blood. A blood sample was taken, and the individual was allowed to leave the police station with a warning to only drive sober in the future.
While the name of the Chief Inspector responsible for traffic management in the Gelsenkirchen police is not publicly provided, the incident serves as a reminder to all residents and visitors: If driving, whether in a car, on a bicycle, or on an E-scooter, one should stay sober. The aim is to protect oneself and others on the roads.
The individual now faces a procedure for an administrative offense. The Gelsenkirchen police encourage everyone to make responsible choices when using any mode of transportation to ensure a safer city for all.
