NFL Announces Enhanced Security Measures Following Manhattan Shooting

The key security enhancements recommended include updated threat assessments at every facility to accurately identify and mitigate risks, the presence of armed law enforcement or security officers at all team and league facilities whenever players or staff are present, and weapons screening for entry into team and league facilities involving walk-through magnetometers and X-ray scanners for bags—similar to security checks at NFL games.
The NFL memo acknowledges that these changes will impact day-to-day operations but emphasizes safety as the highest priority. The memo states that safety is foundational, not a background function.
Investigators believe Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, targeted the NFL offices in the shooting incident. Tamura, who had a history of mental illness, was found dead after shooting several people in the lobby and another in a 33rd-floor office. According to reports, Tamura had a grievance against the NFL related to his belief that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease.
However, it is important to note that Tamura did not play in the NFL professionally, despite playing high school football in California a decade ago.
The NFL offices had been closed and staff working remotely following the incident, underscoring the league's intent to significantly upgrade security across all its facilities. The enhanced security measures will be reviewed at a special league meeting on Aug. 26.
