Rolling up Sleeves for Life: Blood Donation in Saxony-Anhalt

Summers in Saxony-Anhalt can be lovely, but they can also put a strain on blood supplies. Around 500 blood donations are needed each day here, and nationwide, up to 15,000 to keep patients’ needs met. As travel increases during the summer months, it's important to maintain a steady supply. Recent years have seen repeated shortages – stocks have depleted, and hospitals were left without adequate supplies. For instance, last summer, the DRK blood donation institute in Dessau, supplying over 40 medical facilities throughout Saxony-Anhalt, was short by around 1,500 blood units.

Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne emphasizes the importance of donating blood: "It might come to anyone – family, friends, or yourself. Donating blood takes only a few minutes, costs nothing, doesn't hurt, and most importantly, it saves lives. Blood donors are examples of responsibility, solidarity, and compassion." Each donation can be divided into three preparations – plasma, platelets, and red blood cells – potentially saving up to three lives. Blood is a vital resource crucial in healthcare, yet, despite scientific advancements, it can't be artificially produced.

To donate blood, you need to be at least 18, in good health, and without acute infections. A questionnaire and a medical examination are conducted at each donation, ensuring donors' simultaneous health check-ups. Women can donate up to four times a year, while men can donate up to six times. All blood groups are needed, including plasma donors.

Looking for a blood donation opportunity? Here's how to find one in Saxony-Anhalt:

  3. Review the list of upcoming donation dates and locations.
  4. Optionally, reserve a time slot online.
  5. Check local news or community calendars for additional events not listed on the main portal.

Remember, checking the official DRK website or contacting your local DRK chapter for the most current information and possible appointment requirements is essential. Be a hero – donate blood. Your selfless act could save a life! 💉💖🩺

Other medical-conditions may temporarily disqualify individuals from donating blood. Regular donations of health-and-wellness essentials like blood are crucial for maintaining a steady supply during the summer months when travel increases.
