Recognized Cancer Researchers Win New Asclepius Medicine Award
The Broermann Medical Innovation Award, endowed with one million euros, was presented for the first time this year. The prestigious award was given to US-based cancer researchers Carl June and Michel Sadelain in recognition of their groundbreaking work in CAR-T cell therapy.
Carl June, born in Denver, Colorado in 1953, and Michel Sadelain, born in Paris in 1960, are renowned for their contributions to cancer treatment. June, the director of the Columbia Initiative in Cell Engineering and Therapy, established in 2024, and Sadelain, recognised for his work in creating synthetic receptors, known as chimeric antigen receptors (CAR), for T-cells, have achieved remarkable success rates in leukemia and cancer of the lymphatic system and bone marrow with CAR-T cells.
June, who earned his Ph.D. in Houston, Texas, and has held a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania since 2012, began his scientific career with the US Navy. After founding the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1999, he has been at the forefront of CAR-T cell research.
Sadelain, who obtained his medical doctorate in 1984 at the University of Paris, has had a distinguished career, with stints in Canada and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), before moving to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York in 1994.
The award presentation will be organised through the University Hospital of Gießen and Marburg, and is set to be presented in December by the Hessian Minister President Boris Rhein (CDU) in Wiesbaden. The Broermann Medical Innovation Award was founded by the late Große Broermann, who passed away on February 25 last year at the age of 80.
CAR-T cells, a result of June and Sadelain's work, have demonstrated impressive success rates in treating cancer. Further trials for other types of cancer are ongoing. Asklepios, the company that employs around 68,000 people in around 170 medical facilities, treats over 3.5 million patients per year, according to the company.
The Broermann Medical Innovation Award is a testament to the significant strides being made in cancer research and treatment. The groundbreaking work of Carl June and Michel Sadelain in CAR-T cell therapy offers hope for countless cancer patients worldwide.
