Rabid Dog Attacks 15 Hikers in Bali, Sparking Emergency Response

A rabid dog has attacked 15 hikers on Mount Batukaru in Bali, Indonesia, prompting an emergency vaccination drive and intensified containment efforts by local authorities. The incident has raised concerns about the spread of rabies in the region.

The dog, later captured and confirmed positive for rabies, bit several hikers on their lower bodies. All victims received immediate rabies vaccines and will complete a three-dose regimen. Symptoms of rabies include headaches, fever, hydrophobia, and photophobia, with a high fatality rate if untreated.

Authorities in Bali have launched a vaccination drive, with the Tabanan Agriculture Agency vaccinating around 500 dogs and initiating a rescue and relocation program. They are also collaborating with local NGOs to focus on 'red zone' areas with high rabies transmission alerts. Over 34,000 animal bites suspected to carry rabies were recorded in Bali in the first six months of 2025, resulting in 12 human deaths.

The rabies outbreak in Bali underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt medical care following animal bites. Authorities are working diligently to contain the spread of the disease and prevent further human fatalities.
