Querétaro Residents Worry Over Growing Homeless Population
Residents of La Sierrita, Hércules, and Niño Héroes neighborhoods in Querétaro are worried about the growing number of homeless people in their communities. The homeless are seeking warmth and assistance by lighting bonfires, posing risks to nearby businesses and homes. Councilor Ivonne Olascoaga Correa has received requests from concerned residents to address this issue.
The number of homeless people in Querétaro has been increasing. Last August, the Municipal Institute to Prevent Risk Behavior counted 293 homeless individuals across the 7 delegations. By December, this number had decreased to 198. While there are no specific data on homeless students, general factors such as economic conditions, social and family problems, and limited support services may contribute to this trend.
Some homeless individuals may behave aggressively or be under the influence of intoxicants when seeking help, further alarming residents. Councilor Olascoaga emphasized the need for social programs and assistance, not stigmatization or relocation, to address this issue.
The increase in homeless people in Querétaro is a cause for concern. While the number has fluctuated, the issue persists. Councilor Olascoaga is working to address this problem, focusing on assistance and support rather than relocation.
