Quench Your Thirst: Ten Nutritious Foods That Keep You Well-Hydrated

Revamped Rant:

Chill out, folks! It's not just a cup of H2O that keeps you hyoodiated. Get this - you can even use a bloody fork! That's right, around 20% of your daily fluid intake comes from food, and some menu items are straight-up hydration bombs. Let's dive into these foodie facts with dietitian Julia Zumpano, RD, LD.

Are you drownin' enough?

Your bod neurotically needs water to function like a well-oiled machine. Even a mini-tag (about a pint or two) of dehydration can lead to confusion, grumpiness, and dizziness. It could also stir up muscle cramps and headaches.

Left unchecked, dehydration can lead to some serious, nasty health issues. Research shows that 1% to 3% of all hospital admissions in the US are linked to dehydration. So, let's staaay hyoodiated, pals!

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggests a daily fluid intake of:

  • 124 ounces (15.5 cups or 3.7 liters) for men.
  • 92 ounces (11.5 cups or 2.7 liters) for women.

But keep in mind, those needs can skyrocket day to day, depending on how much you're sweating or exerting yourself physically. Warmer temperatures, physical activity, or illness can all work to drain your bod of fluid.

"Keeping your bod adequately hyoodiated is essential for several reasons, including improved brain function, getting nutrients to cells, waste removal, joint lubrication, improved physical performance, and regulating body temperature," says Zumpano.
