Pregnant Women's Genetic Testing Surges in Baden-Württemberg

Health insurance provider Barmer crunched the numbers and discovered a striking increase. A whopping 47.7% of pregnant women in Baden-Württemberg underwent a blood test for trisomies in 2022, a considerable jump from the 25% recorded in the previous year.
Since the advent of July 2022, Germany's national health insurers have shoulder the costs of these Non-Invasive Prenatal Tests (NIPTs). Predictably, older mothers tote the highest numbers for undergoing NIPTs, with around 65% of women aged 36 and above in Baden-Württemberg opting for the procedure in 2022. As stated by Barmer's regional director, Winfried Ploetz, "Trisomies are rare, but their occurrence ramps up with age."
Trisomies transpire when certain chromosomes multiply in a child's cells, resulting in physical abnormalities, intellectual disabilities, and a shortened lifespan.
