Police officer administers Narcan to revive chief, who reportedly overdosed on suspected fentanyl during an apprehension incident
In the small town of Wiscasset, Massachusetts, a dramatic incident unfolded that tested the quick thinking and training of local law enforcement.
The incident, which was captured on camera, involved Wiscasset Police Chief Larry Hesseltine and Officer Jonathan Barnes. According to reports, Officer Barnes noticed Chief Hesseltine exhibiting signs of an overdose during a routine arrest.
Chief Hesseltine recalls leaning up against a police cruiser before losing consciousness. Signs of his overdose included a 'thousand-yard stare' and lack of responsiveness. Officer Barnes, acting swiftly, administered Narcan to Chief Hesseltine, preventing a potential tragedy.
The EMTs found Chief Hesseltine unresponsive with no signs of breathing. However, a minute later, he regained consciousness, thanks to Officer Barnes' quick actions.
The cause of Chief Hesseltine's overdose is believed to be an accidental exposure to fentanyl during a search of a suspect's vehicle. Chief Hesseltine also believes he cut his arm on a guardrail during the arrest, which may have allowed fentanyl to enter his bloodstream.
Two suspects, Joshua Watters and George Bronn, were arrested on charges of unlawful drug possession, carrying a concealed weapon, violating a condition of release, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
While the search results do not provide information on who employed Officer Jonathan Barnes before his assignment with Wiscasset Police Chief Larry Hesseltine, his quick thinking and timely administration of Narcan undoubtedly saved the Chief's life.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day, and the importance of training and quick thinking in such critical situations.
