From Career Shifter to Business Proprietor
After completing a six-week retraining course, Jan entered the working world as a certified pest controller. Starting with a company active across North Rhine-Westphalia, he quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming co-owner of the Münsterland's Olfen branch office. His customer area stretches from Koblenz in the south to Bremen in the north and even into Holland in the west. With a team of 16 dedicated employees, he has built an outstanding team and students, something he could not have imagined at the commencement of his journey.
The industry continues to witness substantial growth, offering enticing opportunities such as becoming a service manager, quality manager, or exploring advanced roles like a technician or environmental protection specialist. The profession is well-regarded, and there is no observed shortage of skilled workers, perhaps owing to the industry's substantial online presence.
Pest Controllers: Heroes in Disguise
Pest controllers save the day, tackling common issues like rodent infestations, invasive insects, bedbugs, and pigeon deterrence, among other concerns. They also focus on pest monitoring and prevention, employing cutting-edge methods and technology to protect communities. While their clients may be relieved once the pests are gone, they're often grateful for the peace of mind that comes with eliminating the pest threat.
Engaging with a diverse range of customers every day, pest controllers gain valuable insights into the intricacies of various lifestyles and work environments. The role brings endless excitement and novelty, as no two encounters are ever alike.
Jan's typical workweek consists of 40 hours, although it occasionally fluctuates. He enjoys a decent income, allowing him to indulge in occasional dining out or gifts for loved ones. Simultaneously, he continues to manage his family's farm as a hobby and saves €500 a month for private retirement through a worldwide equity investment plan.
Rising fuel prices pose a challenge, as Jan travels around 70,000 kilometers annually on the job. However, the need for his services remains constant, even during emergencies.
