Paying homage to Charlène Favier, one of the Femen organization's key founders.
In the world of activism, few groups have made as bold a statement as Femen. This Ukrainian feminist collective, founded in 2008, has been at the forefront of the fight against sex tourism, prostitution, and oppression. Their unique approach, which involves the strategic deployment of femininity in public protests, has turned heads and sparked conversations across the globe.
Oksana Shachko, Anna Hutsol, and Alexandra Shevchenko are just a few of the fearless women who have fought alongside Femen. Oksana's story, in particular, is one of resilience and determination. After facing imprisonment, beatings, and torture in Russia, she sought refuge in Paris in 2013.
Her life's struggles, including her battles with loneliness and depression, are the focus of the upcoming film "Oxana - My Life for Freedom," directed by Charline Favier. The film, set for release on July 24, 2024, promises to shed light on the darker aspects of Oksana's life while inspiring viewers to take action against injustice.
Half of the film was shot in Paris and the other half in Budapest. In preparation for her role, Albina Korzh, who plays Oksana, spoke with Oksana's men, her mother, and even Oksana herself. She was also provided with conversations, photos, videos, and other materials to fully embody the character.
Oksana was known for her openness about her sexuality and her body, a trait that Charlène Favier, the film's director, took into account during the creation of the film. To ensure a balanced portrayal of languages, the film was financed in French and features a balance of French, Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian words.
Interestingly, Charlène Favier did not know Oksana Shachko before being approached to film her life. The casting process for "Oxana" took place over two years via Zoom, with Albina Korzh being discovered for the role of Oksana.
The film is not just a biographical account but a call to action. It aims to inspire viewers to stand up against oppression, much like Oksana and her Femen co-founders did. Femen, with their unique approach to activism, have shown that the female body can be a powerful weapon in the fight against patriarchal systems that sexualize and exploit women.
In a world where the line between beauty and exploitation is often blurred, Femen's activism serves as a beacon of hope, challenging societal norms and demanding a radical shift in attitudes towards women's rights and bodily autonomy.
