In the lush forests of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the autumn leaves are changing, painting the landscape with vibrant hues. However, the beauty of these woods can be deceptive, as many people have found themselves lost in their depths. To help prevent such occurrences, the "Volunteer" search and rescue squad, led by Sergei Shukrin, has shared some invaluable advice.

First and foremost, it's crucial to be well-equipped. A waterproof protection such as a piece of plastic, a raincoat, or a survival blanket is essential. Additionally, carrying a fully charged phone with money and an external charger (power bank) is vital. Remember, a phone can serve as a lifeline, allowing you to call for help or navigate your way back.

While in the forest, dressing appropriately is key. Camouflage clothing is strictly prohibited. Instead, wear bright clothes, and consider adding a reflective vest for extra visibility.

Matches, lighters, energy bars, water, a thermos, and medicine for several days should be included in your kit. It's also advisable to bring a "mushroom picker's kit" during forest excursions, especially if you plan on foraging for food.

Before setting foot in the forest, it's recommended to gather necessary items and get oriented with the area. Familiarise yourself with the location of roads, forests, rivers, and populated areas. A map can be downloaded to a phone or simply printed out for reference while in the forest.

It's also essential to inform others of your plans. If you don't, no one will look for you if you get lost. Call relatives, friends, and neighbours and inform them of your plans and expected return time.

In the event of an emergency, a whistle should be included for signaling, and sticks can be used to hit trees as a substitute. For those over 40, it's advisable to bring glasses or a magnifying glass with them.

Training for volunteers under the "Rescuer Nearby" (16+) project will begin in October. If you're interested in learning more about search and rescue techniques, consider signing up.

In the past few months, the squad has received 89 requests for searches of people lost in the forest. From June to September 2025, a total of 130 people got lost in the forests of the Nizhny Novgorod region. Out of these, 123 were found alive and 4 sadly passed away.

Stay safe and enjoy the beauty of the forest with these practical tips from the "Volunteer" search and rescue squad.
