Bracing for the Worst: Flood Protection Drill at the Semperoper
Practice for Flood Resistance at Semperoper - Opera House Conducting Flood Protection Drills
Gearing up for the unexpected, the Semperoper is set to stage a flood protection drill this weekend. The exercise, a crucial part of an extensive safety plan derived from the aftermath of the 2002 flood, aims to ensure everyone is prepared and ready to respond swiftly and effectively in the event of another disaster.
The Semperoper faced the brunt of the 2002 flood, knocking it out of action for several months. The deluge resulted in approximately 27 million euros worth of damage, forcing the opera to resume performances three months late on November 9, fully operational again in March 2003.
Boosted by structural improvements and equipped with mobile flood defenses like powerful pumps, the Saxon State Opera is now better equipped to tackle floods. These devices are stored at the DRK Logistik HUB and will be brought in by the German Red Cross at the sign of an alert.
On Saturday, the Technical Relief Agency's deployment forces will erect protective barriers on Theaterplatz, with support from the Reserve Association of Saxony and Semperoper staff. The drill focuses on perfecting the harmony between all parties involved, from the initial alarm to material transportation and the setting up of protective systems.
The Semperoper stands in flood-prone Dresden, which has a history of suffering during major floods such as the 2002 and 2013 Elbe floods. Despite these challenges, the opera house continues to persevere, adapting and innovating to safeguard its valuable heritage for the future.
In line with their commitment to ensure public safety, the Semperoper has integrated scientific research into their community policy, focusing on addressing the risks and impacts of flooding. Furthermore, to sustain a healthy and safe work environment, the opera house has established an extensive health-and-wellness program within their employment policy, aiming to provide employees with the necessary resources and support to cope with stressful situations such as flood disasters.
