Novo Nordisk & Costco Team Up to Expand Access to Popular Weight Loss Drugs Ozempic & Wegovy
Novo Nordisk and Costco have joined forces to expand access to popular weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy. This partnership aims to make these medications more convenient and affordable for U.S. consumers.
The Danish pharmaceutical giant, Novo Nordisk, will now offer Ozempic and Wegovy at over 500 Costco pharmacies nationwide. This move is expected to introduce these drugs to a broader audience, as more than 100 million people visit Costco for groceries annually.
Costco members with a prescription will pay $499 out of pocket for a four-week supply of either Ozempic or Wegovy. This price is about half of the list price for Ozempic and about two-thirds less than that of Wegovy. Additionally, executive members and Costco Citibank credit cardholders will receive an extra 2% discount on the prescription price.
Semaglutide, the active ingredient in both drugs, mimics a natural hormone that slows digestion and signals fullness. In a four-year study, participants using semaglutide were able to shed an average of around 10% of their body weight and sustain that weight loss.
With this partnership, Novo Nordisk aims to make access to its weight loss medications more convenient. The expansion to Costco pharmacies, coupled with the reduced out-of-pocket costs, is projected to significantly increase the number of U.S. users of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, from the current 7 million to 24 million by 2035.
