New Doc 'Spain's Afro Heritage' Unveils Country's African Roots

A new documentary, 'Spain's Afro Heritage, a Hidden Legacy', is shedding light on the often overlooked African roots of Spanish history. The film explores the significant presence of people of African origin in Spain, from prehistoric times to the modern age.

The documentary features experts such as Antumi Toasije, Esther 'Mayoko' Ortega, Gonzalo Hernández Baptista, Esther García Ejome, Gonzalo Oteo García, Jesús Cosano, and Boni Ofogo. They delve into the historical figures of African descent who have shaped Spain, including Juan de Valladolid, Juan Latino, and Elena de Cepedes.

Spanning over a millennium, North African genetic heritage was present in the DNA of Valencia's inhabitants until the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609. During the Middle Ages, around one-eighth of Spain's population was of African descent. In the Modern Age, more than two million enslaved people lived in the Iberian Peninsula. The documentary also explores the genetic evidence, such as the Mesolithic hunter-gatherer known as the Man of La Braña, who had an African origin.

To bring these stories to life, cities like Madrid and Seville offer guided tours organized by associations like Conciencia Afro and Sevilla Negra. These tours showcase the black history hidden in plain sight, challenging the historical narrative that often associates Spain with a purely white European past.

The documentary 'Spain's Afro Heritage, a Hidden Legacy' is challenging the perception of Spain's history by highlighting the significant role played by people of African origin. From prehistoric times to the modern age, their influence has been profound, shaping the culture, genetics, and demographics of the country. These stories, long silenced, are now being brought to light, offering a more comprehensive understanding of Spain's rich heritage.
