Germany Sees Record High COVID-19 Cases and Deaths Amid Stable Transmission Levels

In a stark contrast to the recent stability in COVID-19 cases, Germany reported a record high of 126,955 new infections and 214 deaths within 24 hours on Tuesday, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). These figures are provisional and may be corrected later.

The current estimate of active COVID-19 cases stands at around 1,423,600, with a total of 8,87 million people having tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. The total number of deaths has reached 116,960. This marks an increase of 71 percent or 52,550 cases compared to the previous Tuesday, and about 515,100 more cases than the previous week, setting a new record high.

Despite this surge, it's important to note that, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) report for week 33 (9-15 August 2025), there has been no reported increase or epidemiologically linked rise in COVID-19 cases in Germany in the past few weeks leading up to mid-August. The RKI also does not indicate any recent surge in COVID-19 cases in its latest updates as of late August.

The absence of linked cases in official surveillance suggests stable or low transmission levels recently. This assessment contrasts with earlier pandemic peaks and suggests current epidemiological control or low circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in Germany in this period.

For more detailed data on the exact case counts or recent weekly trends, consulting RKI’s detailed weekly epidemiological reports or Germany’s national COVID-19 dashboard would be recommended. However, current authoritative sources show no increase in cases recently.

The incidence rate rose from 840.3 the day before to 894.3 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants within the last seven days, another record high. Within the last seven days, there were 1,118 deaths, averaging 160 deaths per day.

As the pandemic continues, it's crucial to follow public health guidelines, get vaccinated, and stay informed to help curb the spread of the virus.
