National Nutrition Month: 'Food Connects Us' Celebrates Cultural Bonds and Health
This March marks National Nutrition Month®, themed 'Food Connects Us', celebrating the bonds food shares with cultures, families, health, and memories. Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) play a vital role, offering medical nutrition therapy and guiding us through food's impact on our well-being.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics provides tip sheets for informed food choices, including budgeting, reducing waste, and plant-based eating. RDNs also work with the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, administered by the USDA FNS, offering nutrition education, social service referrals, and food benefits for nutritious items like milk, cheese, and fruits.
Exploring food's connection to culture involves delving into traditions and history. Essential nutrients, such as calcium, folate, and protein, support us throughout our lives. Choosing foods over supplements is usually the best way to meet our nutrient needs.
National Nutrition Month®, initially launched in 1973 as National Nutrition Week, emphasizes the importance of sound eating habits. This year's theme, 'Food Connects Us', reminds us of the deep connections food shares with our cultures, health, and loved ones. RDNs, through programs like WIC, help us navigate these connections, ensuring we make informed food choices for a healthier life.
