Midway through the "soccer match for leukemia awareness" in this locale
In an inspiring display of community spirit, football clubs across Germany are joining forces in the "Kicken gegen Blutkrebs" (Kicking against Blood Cancer) campaign. The action, initiated by Wolfgang Poddig, aims to motivate people to register as potential stem cell donors with DKMS, starting with his son's football club, TSV Mähringen.
The closing festival for this heartwarming initiative is scheduled for October 13th, where prizes will be awarded. The club with the most typings will receive a new set of jerseys, every tenth participating club will receive a keg of beer, and new footballs are among the prizes. The festival will be hosted by sports moderator Jens Zimmermann.
Several clubs have already registered for the campaign. TSV Mähringen and Tübinger Sportverein 1903 e.V. (TSV 1903 Tübingen) have announced events to register new donors, with TSV 1903 Tübingen hosting a themed double home game on August 31, 2025. Registrations for clubs are still possible until September 22, 2025, aiming for events by September 27, 2025.
TSV Kohlberg currently leads the list of potential donors with 43 new registrations. TSV Mähringen's department leader, Orhan Bobic, reports that they have already surpassed the average number of new typings.
The action has been well-received by supporting clubs, with many new registrations exceeding expectations. Marius Launinger, the press officer and deputy department leader of SV Rommelsbach, was surprised by the high number of registrations, even though they had a similar action at a previous Christmas party.
Marco Medel, game leader of TSV Kohlberg, states that they are simply saving other people's lives by participating in the action. Many spectators and fans have joined the action without hesitation, strengthening the bond between teams.
Poddig plans to restart the typing action in two years, involving other sports and well-known athletes. Interested parties can register on-site at a stand during the game, or via email at [email protected] or [email protected]. Registration for the action is still possible until October 12th.
As Coach Heiko Lichtenberger emphasizes, as a club, they have a responsibility to help. This powerful initiative serves as a testament to the power of sports in bringing communities together and making a difference in people's lives. Every 12 minutes, someone in Germany is diagnosed with blood cancer, and every 27 seconds worldwide. By participating in the "Kicken gegen Blutkrebs" campaign, football clubs and individuals alike are making a significant contribution to saving lives.
