Malaysia Boosts Cardiac Care: MOH Adds Two ICLs, Expands Prevention Programs

The Ministry of Health (MOH) is bolstering its cardiac care services. It plans to add two invasive cardiology laboratories (ICL) at the Serdang Heart Centre, with procurement in 2026 and operation expected in 2027. This move aims to tackle cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in Malaysia.

MOH's focus on heart health is timely, given the prevalence of risk factors among Malaysians. One in three has high cholesterol, one in three has hypertension, and one in six has diabetes. To combat this, several hospitals in Melaka, Miri, and Tawau have received additional angiography catheterisation laboratories (Cathlab) worth RM14.5 million.

The ministry is taking a multi-pronged approach. It's strengthening treatment facilities and prevention programs. YB Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad, the Minister of Health, is overseeing the affiliation of the two ICLs at the Serdang Heart Centre. He also revealed that negotiations for Budget 2026 include strengthening regional health security, promoting research-driven innovation, and ensuring equitable access to diagnostics and therapeutics across ASEAN.

MOH is committed to improving heart health. It's seeking increased allocations in Budget 2026, following a RM45.3 billion allocation in Budget 2025. With these efforts, the ministry aims to enhance heart treatment in government hospitals and save more lives.
