A recent study published in Neurology discovered that people with diabetes who practice certain healthy habits are at a decreased risk of dementia.

The study, which included participants from the UK Biobank, investigated the impact of seven healthy lifestyle habits on dementia risk. These habits included:

  • eating a balanced diet
  • adequate sleep
  • reducing sedentary behavior
  • maintaining frequent social interaction

Researchers found that adherence to these habits was associated with a lower risk of developing dementia. But the risk reduction was more pronounced for those with diabetes.

Dr. Yingli Lu, Ph.D., one of the study authors, stated, "Our findings highlight that although patients with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing dementia later compared with those without, adherence to an overall healthy lifestyle may greatly reduce this risk."

While the study suggests that healthy lifestyle choices can help reduce dementia risk, particularly for those with diabetes, it did have limitations. These included self-reported lifestyle data, lack of data on lifestyle factor changes, and potential misclassification of participants with diabetes.

Nevertheless, the findings align with general evidence that suggests several lifestyle habits can reduce the risk of dementia. These include regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, weight management, and lifelong learning.

For people with diabetes, managing the condition through lifestyle changes could also help reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. However, further research is needed to understand the exact mechanisms and benefits of combining healthy lifestyle behaviors.
