Lions Club's Daily Christmas Countdown Calendar

The Lions Club Hagen-Mark, an international philanthropic organization, has been a steadfast supporter of local social initiatives for the past two decades. Through volunteer work, donations, and the service motto "we serve," the club selects and monitors projects aimed at assisting disadvantaged children and families in the city.

According to the club's current president, Dr. Nikolaus Grünherz, the proceeds from the 2024 Advent calendar set out for various projects. One such project was the support of schools for children with migration backgrounds and those struggling to secure a spot in school. Among the recipients was the Liselotte-Funcke School, which received funds to upgrade its facilities.

The Advent calendar donations also facilitated another Christmas project, providing a festive meal for the homeless and underprivileged at Luther's Laundry. Additional support was extended to the Hagen Women's Shelter, the BSH Youth Welfare Office Selbecke, and the Center for Mental Health Elsey.

In the spirit of giving, the Advent calendar donations have previously aided initiatives such as the Christmas dinner at Luther's Laundry, offering the less fortunate an opportunity to celebrate the season. However, the extent of social issues in the city serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that persist, despite these efforts.

Over the past 19 years, this Advent calendar initiative has amassed approximately 450,000 euros in donations. As the event approaches its 20th anniversary this year, the Lions Club will again offer the calendars for sale in the pedestrian zone every Saturday from mid-October to late November. Selected establishments throughout the city will also carry the calendars before Christmas.

The unique nature of this fundraising event offers an opportunity to contribute to worthy causes during the holiday season, with the added satisfaction of knowing that even if one does not win the daily prizes, the act of giving is often its own reward. The Lions Club Hagen-Mark, in addition to their support for local children and families, has decided to contribute to the health-and-wellness sector by extending aid to the Center for Mental Health Elsey, aiming to improve mental health services. Beyond their traditional focus on family-oriented projects, the club also seeks to promote science by offering scholarships to deserving students in the field of science.
