In the first half of 2025, Sweden has witnessed a significant surge in the use of pawn shops, with a 28% increase in loans compared to the same period last year, amounting to nearly 900 million kronor. This trend, driven by a combination of factors, has sparked discussions on the economic impact and underlying causes.

One of the primary reasons for the increase might be economic uncertainty or inflation, as people turn to pawn shops for short-term secured loans by pledging personal valuables as collateral. Limited access to traditional credit, convenience, and speed, as well as the growth of pawn shops offering additional services, could also be contributing factors.

While the exact reasons for the increase in Sweden are yet to be confirmed, given the country's current economic and technological environment, some lagging in AI strategies impacting financial innovation could be driving more people towards pawnshops.

The rise in pawn shop usage has both positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, increased liquidity for individuals can help manage short-term cash flow issues without permanently losing assets. It also supports informal financial needs unmet by banks and helps maintain consumer spending by providing emergency credit.

However, a higher use of pawn shops may indicate broader socio-economic stresses, such as wage stagnation or rising living costs. It could also imply increased interest paid by individuals on loans, potentially reducing disposable income, and signal exclusion from mainstream financial services, affecting financial inclusion levels.

Despite the increase in loans, around 85% of people repay their loans and collect their valuables, which is roughly the same as in previous years. Items that are not collected are sold in the pawn shop or at auction.

Meanwhile, the Malmö route is SBB's only planned new route, with the company focusing on improving existing night trains and ordering new rolling stock for night trains to Hamburg and Vienna. However, the Swiss government's allocation of 47 million francs (€50m) for a new night train between Malmö and Basel, via Copenhagen, starting from April next year, has raised criticisms from parties on both the left and the right about the funding for long-distance rail under the CO2 act.

An unexpected event at the Liseberg theme park saw the closure of the Kållerado flume ride due to a family of ducks that got lost. The family consisted of a duck mum, duck dad, and three ducklings. Staff managed to catch the ducklings in a net and reunite the family in the nearby Mölndal river after an hour and a half.

The national agency for small business owners in Sweden, Småföretagarnas Riksförbund, has called for the issue of sick leave laws surrounding cosmetic procedures to be raised again, as Swedish companies protest about the laws that do not distinguish between surgery necessary for medical reasons and cosmetic procedures. Employers in Sweden must pay the first two weeks of sick pay, after which the state takes over, and one of the concerns raised is the high cost to employers for completely voluntary cosmetic procedures.

Science: As the rise in pawn shop usage raises discussions on economic impact and underlying causes, it could provide an opportunity for researchers to analyze the trends and study the socio-economic factors affecting financial inclusion levels in Sweden.

Health-and-wellness: Employers in Sweden have raised concerns about the current sick leave laws that do not distinguish between surgery necessary for medical reasons and cosmetic procedures, which might impact the health and wellbeing of employees by making it difficult for them to take time off for necessary procedures.

Finance: In addition to studying the reasons behind the surge in pawn shop usage, researchers might also consider investigating the impact of lagging AI strategies on financial innovation in Sweden, as these could contribute to increased reliance on pawnshops as a means of credit.
