Kiel University Secures Funding Extension for Two Excellence Clusters

Kiel University (CAU) has celebrated a success in the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments, with both of its existing excellence clusters receiving extensions until 2032. The comprehensive university announced the news, revealing that each research consortium — "Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation" and "Roots - Connectivity of Society, Environment, and Culture in Past Worlds" — will receive approximately 70 million euros.

The CAU now stands among 25 top universities in Germany that have won two or more clusters, making it eligible to apply for the title of an excellence university in the second funding line of the Excellence Strategy. Eckhard Quandt, Vice President for Research, Scientific Infrastructure and Transfer, expressed his delight: "We are extremely pleased that both clusters have been extended."

The Excellence Initiative in Germany supports research excellence in universities, offering substantial funding to boost innovative research. The funding for CAU's extended research clusters primarily originates from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

As part of this initiative, the CAU participates in various research collaborations across the country, fostering research quality and competitiveness. Notably, Kiel University is eligible to apply for the title of an excellence university under the Excellence Strategy's second funding line.

The extension of Kiel University's research clusters, Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation and Roots - Connectivity of Society, Environment, and Culture in Past Worlds, will focus on various medical-conditions, particularly chronic-diseases, and aims to contribute significantly to health-and-wellness, thereby furthering the science behind higher education and community policy in the field of health care research. As a result, this extension will empower Kiel University to collaborate more extensively with other top universities in Germany on research related to health-and-wellness, science, and medical-conditions, strengthening the country's research competitiveness and quality.
