Kazakhstan Recovers 1.3 Billion Tenge, Redirects Sports Funding
In a significant move to enhance sports management, Kazakhstan has recovered 1.3 billion tenge spent unjustifiably on sports events and salary bonuses. This follows a series of amendments to the Law 'On Physical Culture and Sports', granting the Ministry of Tourism and Sports new budget approval powers.
The amendments, effective April 15, 2025, also reduced funding for professional sports, including football clubs, by 6.7 billion tenge. This reduction, from 60.5 to 53.8 billion, aims to redirect resources towards more productive areas.
New regulations introduced in December 2024 and March 2025 require professional football clubs to have departments for children's and youth football, youth teams, stadiums, and facilities for activities to continue receiving state funding. This aligns with the state's top priority to promote a healthy lifestyle and develop sports, particularly for children.
Eleven sports facilities were transferred to state institutions due to ineffective management. An external analysis revealed systemic issues impeding domestic sports development and international success. Professional clubs were found to prioritize high salaries and training camps over building sports infrastructure.
With these changes, the government aims to fortify sports infrastructure, a critical factor for the country's health and future. The recovered funds and redirected budget aim to ensure that state funding supports effective and sustainable sports development.
