Jailed for 32 years: Stepfather of sons detained for 40 days in the Amazon, convicted of child abuse against a 10-year-old girl.
In the heart of the Colombian Amazon, four Mucutuy children miraculously survived for 40 days after a plane crash in the Guaviare jungle. Their incredible journey, filled with resilience and resourcefulness, has been widely documented, including in a Netflix documentary.
The children, aged between 7 and 10, relied on their survival instincts, their Indigenous background, and knowledge of the environment. They drank rainwater to stay hydrated, searched for and ate familiar edible fruits and palm seeds, and consumed crackers they had with them. The oldest child took a leadership role, guiding her siblings' efforts to find food and water, despite facing challenges such as mosquitoes and diarrhea.
The search for the children, named "Operation Hope", was an intense 40-day endeavour that ended with their rescue, about five kilometers from the crash site. After being rescued, they were placed under the protection of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute (ICBF).
However, the story took a darker turn when it was discovered that the children had been victims of sexual abuse. The abuses occurred between 2020 and 2023 in the indigenous reservation of Puerto Sábalo - Los Monos, in Solano (Caquetá). The General Prosecutor's Office of the Nation found that the stepfather, Manuel Ranoque, had intimidated the girl to prevent her from revealing the abuses.
Recently, Ranoque was sentenced to 32 years in prison for committing rape and aggravated sexual acts against his 10-year-old stepdaughter. This sentence will be served in a prison facility.
