Join us as we delve into the latest developments surrounding the catastrophic 5.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked the popular tourist destination of Marmaris in southwestern Turkey on Tuesday morning. Struck at an ungodly hour of 2.17 am local time (1.27 am CET), the earthquake left more than just a few jitters in its wake.

The impact was initially minimal, with no reported damage to residential buildings, according to Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. However, the tranquility was short-lived when news of a 14-year-old girl's death in the nearby resort of Fethiye reached the ears of the world. The young girl perished due to an unfortunate panic attack triggered by the earthquake. Despite hospital attempts to save her, her life could not be spared.

In the province of Mugla, where Marmaris lies, a staggering 69 people were injured. Their injuries were primarily the result of panic-induced actions such as jumping from windows or balconies, as they frantically tried to escape the shaking earth.

The epicenter of this earth-shattering event was about ten kilometers off the coast of Marmaris, situated at an astonishing depth of 68 kilometers beneath the surface. As a result, there was no ensuing tsunami, and the likelihood of further significant aftershocks diminished substantially, according to Greek seismologists.

Last year, Mugla greeted a staggering 3.7 million foreign tourists, with the popular beach resort of Bodrum also located within its boundaries. The region's vibrant tourism sector has been a cornerstone of the local economy, offering countless opportunities for travelers yearning for the sun-kissed Turkish Riviera.
