In-progress construction: Herford's inpatient hospice nears completion
The historic building at Unter den Linden 41 in Herford, once a day clinic of the district hospitals, is undergoing a significant transformation. Hospiz Herford gGmbH, a non-profit joint subsidiary of the Diakonisches Werk in the Vlotho church district and the Herford church district, is turning this building into the first stationary hospice in the Herford district.
The construction work is progressing steadily. The deep construction work on the new building has already been completed, and the cellar walls have been concreted. The old building has been gutted, and work on heating, sanitation, and electricity is upcoming. A flat-roof building with a roof terrace, guest rooms, and common areas will be attached to the rear of the existing building. An extension is being built, with around 2,200 m² of gross floor area, ten guest rooms will be created, and a barrier-free elevator will be built next to the entrance. The renovation of the exterior facade is running parallel with the work on the roof, and the windows have already been installed.
The project leader, Byron-Leigh Brown, estimates that the building and thus the hospice will be operational-ready by summer 2026. This milestone for hospice and palliative care in the district area is highly anticipated, as Hospiz Herford gGmbH aims for a close and trusting cooperation with other hospice services.
The financing of the inpatient hospice at the location "Unter den Linden" in Herford is managed by a foundation, but the specific foundation responsible is not identified in the available search results. The construction costs for the stationary hospice are being financed by the "Future in the Wittekindskreis" foundation and a subsidy from the Sparkasse Herford.
Donations are still needed for the hospice and can be made to the foundation fund within the "Zukunft im Wittekindskreis" foundation or directly to the hospice. The IBAN for donations to the foundation is DE83 4945 0120 0000 0275 24 at Sparkasse Herford, while the IBAN for donations directly to the hospice is DE9349450120000029090 at Sparkasse Herford.
It's worth noting that Hospiz Herford gGmbH has already established cooperations regarding the general practitioner and emergency care for their guests. The head of the house and the position of the nursing service director are already competently filled.
The building, being a listed building, is being renovated and restored in accordance with the guidelines for listed buildings. The interior design of the hospice will be bright, cozy, and homely, avoiding a hospital atmosphere.
District Administrator Jürgen Müller considers this creation of a hospice a significant step forward for the district area, emphasizing the importance of quality hospice and palliative care. Kerstin Hensel, managing director of the Diakonisches Werk in the Vlotho church district, has visited the construction site to oversee the progress.
As the construction continues, Hospiz Herford gGmbH remains committed to its mission of providing compassionate care to those in need, fostering a close and trusting relationship with other hospice services, and ensuring the hospice operates as a non-competitive offer to the outpatient hospice services and facilities.
